CUA LIS Accreditation

The Catholic University of America’s Department of Library and Information Science (CUA LIS) master’s degree program in Library and Information Science is fully accredited by the American Library Association’s (ALA) Committee on Accreditation (COA). CUA LIS’s degree program was first accredited by ALA in 1946/47 and has retained its accredited status for over six decades. CUA LIS takes pride in being the only ALA-accredited degree program in Washington, DC. CUA LIS also offers a School Library Media course of study accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The Catholic University of America is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

 

Cyclical Accreditation Review Process

To prepare for our comprehensive program review, members of the CUA LIS community will engage in self-reflection and analysis of our program’s achievements, attainment of educational objectives and learning outcomes, and compliance with the ALA accreditation standards. During this process, we will develop two key documents:

The Plan for the Self-Study, which outlines the process we will follow as we prepare our accreditation review, and

The Self-Study, which details our ongoing systematic planning process of program planning and development, assessment, and continuous improvement from the perspective of the six ALA accreditation standards. This document describes our MSLIS program and it's compliance with the ALA's 2008 Standards for Accreditation; analyses our strengths, weaknesses and challenges; and identifies our plans for future development and continued compliance with the Standards. Our Self-Study includes information derived from ongoing analysis, evaluation, and assessment of student, faculty, and program achievements and attainment of educational outcomes that demonstrates our efforts to attain our objectives and maintain continued compliance with the six ALA accreditation standards.

The self-evaluation process culminates in a site visit by an External Review Panel (ERP) in April 2016 and an accreditation decision document sent to LIS by the ALA’s Committee on Accreditation (COA) in July 2016.

Accreditation and CUA LIS Community Engagement

The CUA LIS community is integral to the accreditation review process. We seek to engage our constituents – students, faculty, instructors, staff, alumni, employers, campus partners, and other interested parties – in our preparations for the accreditation review. During this process, our constituents will have opportunities to provide input into our activities through a variety of avenues, including commenting on our accreditation documents, completing surveys, attending upcoming forums and engagement sessions, and serving as invited committee members. During our site visit, members of our community can visit with the ERP during a reception, tentatively scheduled for April 3, 2016. Details on upcoming engagement opportunities, as well as documents and recordings of past activities are included in the timeline.

 

Purpose of Accreditation 

Accreditation is a voluntary evaluation process of self- and peer-review. The accreditation process seeks to ensure that accredited programs meet appropriate standards of quality and integrity and can be expected to continue to do so. ALA, through the COA, protects the interests of prospective students, employers, and the general public and provides guidance for educators to ensure that accredited programs meet the ALA Accreditation Standards.
